“You mean Toronto’s reputation outside Canada?”
Nick: “Yes as in internationally.”
Lilla: “I not only think that it is damaging to our reputation but were not getting anything done [as a city] so its just going to get worse. All anyone is going to talk about in city counsel is this controversy as opposed to dealing with the things that need to be dealt with. Its going to get worse before it gets better too, in my opinion.
I think he should be a gentleman and resign, so the city can get on with their business.”
“I think that it definitely would hurt Toronto’s reputation for sure. Should he step down as mayor… I don’t know, he’s done a lot of good things as well. I don’t follow politics that much so I can’t give a really great opinion on it but yeah I think I would rather see someone else in his place.”
“Well politicians get away with a lot of things, and it’s the stuff you don’t know about that worry’s me not the stuff that’s out there. What he does for the city as opposed to what he does [personally] while he’s in power is what matters to me as a citizen.
Its kinda an odd debate when you compare US politicians they have done worse things and still seem to be in power. The guy just smoked crack, maybe it’s a bad thing, I don’t know I’m not a policy maker. When it comes down to it maybe he should step down.”
Zsolt: “I think that he should take responsibility and step aside, address the matter, it doesn’t matter if it did happen or not, if it did not happen then it should be pretty easy for him to rectify this misunderstanding if that is the case. If not then I guess he’s a public figure and you want to have a clean slate to be one. I think he should take the time to step down [deal with the issues at hand] and if people want him back he will be back.”
Emily: “Well I’ve lived here for 5 years and over the last 3 I’ve been hearing all kinds of stories about Mayor Ford. Generally I’m pretty disappointed with him even being in office because he is the lease culturally supportive and representative mayor I’ve heard of. So I think this should just be the icing on the cake and its time [for him to step down].”
“I think it would make it more interesting for people to visit, just our of curiosity, but I think if he had any dignity anyone in his position should resign if there is such a controversy surrounding them.”
Nick: “But you think this could drive more people to come visit Toronto? So you see positive and negative aspects to this.”
Jordan: “Publicity is publicity regardless.”
